Climate Computing - Weather forecasting for researchers

model cycle of stratospheric ozone

UC researchers and students at the Centre for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) have used the WRF weather forecasting model with initial- and boundary-condition taken from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to provide daily 48-hour weather forecasts for specific regions of New Zealand.

The above animated GIF image shows the predicted rainfall over New Zealand for the next 48-hour period and was produced as part of the output from the model which runs on a small portion of the UC HPC BlueGene/L supercomputer.

The work-flow to produce the output results for these forecasts was developed by researchers at UCAR and the UC HPC technical team and runs in a completely automated fashion every morning at 0500 NZST (1700 UTC).

For a more detailed description and additional high-resolution forecasts see the UCAR website
